Acrylic baths are quite soft and can easily be damaged from falling tiles during tiling. Sometimes a shower screen can slip and dig into the surface, the lip on the edge of the bath can be split if too much weight is put on it or it is put under pressure when removing the panel. Often an acrylic bath can be damaged in storage or transit.

Acrylic Bath Repair Procedure
- We inspect the damage and work out the the best way to repair the bath.
- With most acrylic baths these days they are so soft that the damage tends to be a crater that is raised at its edges rather than a chip that came out. In this case it is necessary to flatten the ejection area around the damage first so that the area is flat and not raised. If a bit has come out we will need to clean it out and remove any loose bits.
- We fill the crack, hole or chip with a special filler for these fixtures. This may involve fibreglassing if the area has been weakened.
- We let it dry and harden.
- We then sand it and smooth it off so it’s of the same contour and blending with the surface. This may need to do be repeated this several times to get it perfectly smooth again.
- We make up the enamel colour on the spot in your home to match the unit. This takes time and we have perfected the way to do this over years of experience.
- We use a bonding agent again over the entire area of the repair to make sure the matched coating is stuck down hard wherever it is applied.
- We now spray on the acrylic coating with a small spray gun to vanish out the repair with the matched colour we’ve created and blend it out into the original surface. The acrylic repair is now done and you can no longer see the damage and it will be usable again the next day.
Acrylic Bath Repair Standard
The quality of the repair is that you can no longer see the original damage in normal use.
The procedure described briefly above usually vanishes out any trace of the original damage and the repair itself, but we can’t promise that it will be absolutely undetectable by everybody as each person has a different ability to sense and perceive and a greater or lesser desire to find it and judge it.
The system is designed and specified for the repair of baths and shower trays in newly built properties or hotels where the criteria is such that someone buying the property or using the fixture would not notice anything or be able to find the repair if they were told there was a repair somewhere on the unit. It is not visible to them. Someone can walk into the room, look over the bath and see nothing wrong with it. This is the standard we can achieve with the technology as it now exists.
If however what is required is a standard whereby one knows where the repair is and expects to be unable to tell any difference at all between that area and another that has not been worked on or detect any difference whatsoever in that area we can’t promise that.
In some situations if you repeatedly run your hand over the area and move your head back and fourth back and fourth so as to catch it in different light reflections or use a torch and a magnifying glass you may be able to notice something. It is after all a repair and the objective is to improve the situation within reason in such a way that it is not noticed in normal use.
Do Bath Repair kits work?
We only see the repair kits that did not produce a satisfactory result – so we probably have a bias on this point – also we know the difference in quality between the use of a kit and what we can achieve.
The kits tend to fall short in that the colour provided is usually too white so they look like a white patch. Some do have little tinters so that you can adjust the colour but that’s a really skilled task and it takes me quite a long time to train someone in this skill even with all the gear. We make up the colour for your fixture on site to match your fixture.
This brings us to the next point. We carry about 80 things in our toolboxes to carry out this work whereas a kit will have perhaps five.
When we go to put right a kit repair that is not good enough it is usually the case that the use of the kit has made the situation and the size of the repair much bigger. Inexperienced hands usually sand wide of the mark and use excessive coating requiring a lot of work to undo and this can add to the expense of the repair.
It is necessary to be very discreet when doing a repair and to crop it down to the minimum.
We also encounter situations where the kit filler came out soon after it was applied and this is because the list do not come with a bonding agent to secure the filler and the coating in place. We use our proprietary bonding agent minimally twice for any one repair.
I think that a kit repair is only appropriate where a temporary patch up is needed because the unit is planned for replacement in the not to distant future or it’s for people who don’t really care that much about the appearance of the unit anyway.
